Engaging News – Week ending 13 April

Every week engage2 finds the best & latest stories of our industry interests and share them as a weekly round up here, and via our Twitter feeds – @engage2govern & @emotivate during the week.

Topics this week: Social Impact, Tech, Open Government, Sustainability, Governance, CivicTech, Smart Cities, Resilient Cities and engage2 News

CivicTech

A 14% increase in preferring online engagement continues to show shifting Australian attitudes in democracy & government interface. The Mandarin AU analyses new research.

Resilient Cities

Implementing resilient cities within short government cycles is being achieved through quick wins & joint projects, while tapping into businesses is still a work in progress.

Smart Cities

New CEO of Australian Smart Communities Association, Laurie Patton addresses Australia’s population, thinking through location vs size & moving the focus from Sydney/Melbourne to smart communities & smart cities elsewhere.

Governance

New report from Centre of Public Impact Foundation works with the 3 foundations of action, policy & legitimacy for “Finding a more Human Government” with research from citizens & case studies from around the world

Sustainability

A wonderfully innovative City of Burnside (Melbourne) project has an interactive map of the city’s trees & cool datasets, like carbon stored & air pollutants removed. Clear communication helps community engagement & grows value of trees.

Open Government

Open government research continues to flow with Open Government Partnership’s new report about what impacts commitments to completion, updating progress on “starred commitments”.

Tech

Great story about the KP province in Pakistan improving digital jobs for the youth. Working with the World Bank, “Digital KP” is a digital development program with youth inclusion at its core.

Social Impact

Women are storming the start-up industry in MENA cities (Middle East, North Africa). Research shows women are leading social entrepreneurship and 60% more likely to offer innovative solutions than males, with success regardless of education level.

Events

Are you interested in the uneven distribution of Australia’s resources? A new Sydney Ideas lecture series looks at cities, spatial inequality & climate change. Session 1: 7 May, 6pm, free.

engage2 News

At engage2 we go beyond a tech-driven, smart cities definition to embrace smart communities, people-centric communities which are valued & leveraged, both online & offline. This focus can strengthen democracy! Find out more at our June 5 event.

This week we introduced Adam Beck, who was at our #OpenState2017 event, and will be on the June 5 panel. This blog is a great summary of the Open State event, which thinks through smart communities, inclusion & data and building momentum leading to more liveable, sustainable cities.
